Caring for old elephants is a very precise task. Every elephant is different, and you constantly have to adapt to the circumstances.
THANKS TO KAMPAENG SAEN WILDLIFE HOSPITAL’S ANALYSIS OF MALEE’S AND KAMMOON’S POO, WE CAN MOVE FORWARD TO IMPLEMENTING A SPECIALIZED DIET.
The vets have realized Malee does not have any teeth. She is using her gum to che
w and that is the reason she does not absorb nutrition from the grass she eats. Kammoon does have teeth and absorbs the nutrition of the food she is given.
Both our elephants are over 60-years-old. Old elephants often do not drink enough water by themselves, their body does not give a signal anymore that they are thirsty (similar to elderly people) , that is why it is important to give food with high water content.
We will be making changes to both of their diets, to solve their digestive issues.
This includes feeding them: • Bananas for their pro-biotics • Watermelons for the water content (For Malee watermelons are best given peeled as she may not be able to digest the peels) • Lifetime maintenance special pellet food, we will feed this about 2KG daily per elephant. This contains a lot of high quality fibers, and will be given instead of the old brand of pellet food that we had. • Bana grass. For Malee all the grass has to be chopped into small pieces with a machine. For Kammoon the hard parts can be chopped and the upper parts can be fed whole. We will have to mix the chopped parts of the grass with other foods such a bananas and watermelon, to make it more attractive for them to eat. • We will continue to feed them 1KG of okra vegetables with their sticky rice each, the slimy substance of the vegetable makes it easier for them to poo. • Tamarind. We will feed 1-2 balls of tamarind per elephant daily, and cover it in salt. The salt will make the elephants thirsty so they will drink more. • Banana trees. We will start feeding them this as a supplement to their daily diet. They contain water and will make sure their poo is not so dry, so it will pass more easily. The trees will be chopped in very small pieces for easier digestion.
